Winter - Day Trips (17) Spreading it Around at the Meadow Brook Theatre When Angela Drayton, a widow living in a gated retirement community in Florida, grows tired of footing the bills and handing out money to her unappreciative children, she and some of the other residents start the “S.I.N. (Spending It Now) Foundation,” an organization which gives to those really in need. Fearing they will lose their inheritance, her greedy son and his shopaholic wife show up to try to stop the “needless” spending of their money. This is a Michigan premiere of the new comedy by Londos D’Arrigo. Our day will begin with gourmet shopping at Nino Salvaggio’s in Troy, followed by lunch at the Macaroni Grill near the Oakland campus. Then it’s off to the 2 p.m. matinee. (18) Memphis at the Wharton Center From the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, comes this hot Broadway musical that bursts with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love. Inspired by actual events, Memphis is about a white radio DJ who wants to change the world and a black club singer who is ready for her big break. Come along on their incredible journey, filled with laughter, soaring emotion, and roof-raising rock and roll. Memphis was the winner of four 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. (19) The Usual: A Musical Love Story at the Williamston Theatre Take one lonely guy, add a shot of lonely girl and a dash of spunky bartender, blend and serve! In this World Premiere musical, two strangers, each unhappy with their love lives, have a chance encounter in a bar where “the usual” isn’t usual at all. Join Kip, Valerie, and Sam as they navigate the treacherous waters of dating, romance and relationships. This modern musical journey is based on the book and lyrics of Alan Gordon and music by Mark Sutton-Smith. Our day will begin with a stop at the Curwood Castle in Owosso where we will tour and learn more about this historic landmark. (21) From My Hometown at Meadow Brook Theatre Three strangers arrive in New York City from Detroit, Memphis and Philly with one goal in mind: to sing at the world famous Apollo Theatre. Bonded initially by their wide eyes and empty pockets, they develop a ten-year brotherhood that spans the lows of their initial meeting outside the Apollo, to the highs of their shared debut on Harlem’s biggest stage. This is the Michigan Premiere of the 2004 Off-Broadway hit which was recently relaunched in NYC. It features over 30 R & B classics as well as six original songs. (22) Springtime Flowers and More at the Eastern Market The Detroit Eastern Market is the largest historic public market in the United States. Since 1891, it has been home to an amazing community of farmers, merchants, restaurants, unique shops, food lovers, and residents. We’ll be visiting on the Saturday following Flower Day, so this will be a wonderful opportunity to purchase plants for your garden, but it won’t be as busy as Flower Day. Our coach will park at a convenient location, so you can drop off your purchases throughout the day. Lunch will be on your own; however, we will provide a list of restaurant options and a map of the Market on the coach. Our package includes deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU.

(23) Lilac Festival & Lunch at the Grand Hotel  The Mackinac Island Lilac Festival, which began as a one-day event in 1949, has now grown to a ten-day festival celebrating the Island’s lilac collection and much more. We will leave SVSU bright and early via motorcoach and then take a Shepler’s ferry over to the Island. A horse-drawn taxi will take you to the Grand Hotel for the legendary Grand Luncheon Buffet which features hot and cold entrees, seafood, salad, pastries and more. After lunch, you will have the balance of the day to explore Mackinac Island and enjoy this unique place and the scent of lilacs. (01) In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play at the Performance Network in Ann Arbor Upon the dawn of electricity, the aptly named Dr. Givings begins treating his female patient’s “hysteria” with vibration therapy. Oblivious to why it works, the good doctor administers the treatments behind closed doors, while his young wife is left to listen on the other side. When she breaks into his office to try the device for herself, erotic and emotional chaos is unleashed. Please note, this provocative look at gender roles and female sexuality in the Victorian age contains adult themes! (02) On Golden Pond at the Purple Rose in Chelsea Summer would not be complete without a visit to the Purple Rose and this year’s show is a classic! This charming love story follows Ethel and Norman Thayer as they return to their summer home in Maine. Their respite is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of their estranged daughter, her fiancee, and his teenage son. Over the course of the summer, an unlikely friendship develops between Norman and the boy, which sparks a renewed zest for life in the Thayer family. On the way to Chelsea, we will stop in Ann Arbor for a quick tour of the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Of course, we will enjoy lunch prior to the show at the Common Grill. (03) Cranbrook House, Garden and Art Museum As the oldest of metropolitan Detroit’s historic manors, Cranbrook House has a long and illustrious past. You will enjoy a guided tour of the house and learn about the history of the house, which was built by Cranbrook’s founders Ellen and George Booth. After the house tour, enjoy a two-course lunch served in the house, and a self-guided tour of the beautiful gardens. In the afternoon, we will visit the newly remodeled Cranbrook Art Museum, a dynamic forum for contemporary art, craft, and architecture and design. We’ll enjoy a docent-led tour of the special George Nelson exhibit. As Director of Design for Herman Miller furniture, Nelson designed much of the 20th century’s most iconic modernist furniture. One week prior to our trip, you are invited to attend a one-hour lecture about Marshall Frederick’s connection to Cranbrook. The lecture will be led by Melissa Ford, Archivist at the Marshall M. Each year on the weekend after Labor Day, Marshall opens its doors to thousands of visitors. You’ll tour seven historic homes, one historic business, two art centers and seven historic museums. The museums cover diverse specialities, such as unusual architecture, antique home furnishings, Civil War memorabilia, a restored antique post office, and Michigan’s largest collection of magic memorabilia. You can stroll the tree-lined streets, listen to musical entertainment, and purchase snacks from street vendors. Although we will provide coach transportation to Marshall, you’ll use the home tour’s shuttle buses to take you from home to home. Your day begins with a three-course lunch at the historic Schuler’s Restaurant. Our package includes admission to the house tour, lunch, and deluxe motorcoach transportation from SVSU.
