Late Medieval British Drama (346)
In this class, you will read and discuss selected examples of fifteenth-century mystery and morality plays. Mystery plays, sponsored by city guilds, blended public entertainment with religious instruction in their portrayals of biblical stories ranging from Creation to the Last Judgement. Morality plays are dramatized allegories of spiritual struggle. Two modestly priced books should be acquired before the first class: Peter Happe, ed. English Mystery Plays: A Selection (1976) and G.A. Lester, ed. Three Late Medieval Morality Plays: Mankind, Everyman, Mundus et Infans (2007). The instructor for this class is Basil Clark, SVSU Professor of English.
